Pio Nono Photo

In answer to an interesting comment/question of an earlier post, Pope Pius IX may have been the first pope to be photographed.

Hi Father, you may also be interested in the video clip on my website - the List Universe. It is item 7 on the Top 10 incredible film firsts and it is a video of the first Pope ever caught on film - Pope Leo XIII.

Pope Leo XIII was also responsible for ending the castrati practice in the world and he also made sure an audio recording was made of the last castrator (Moreschi) so the world could have a record of it. You can listen to the recording on Top 10 incredible recordings.

Oops - I made an error in the last comment - the correct second URL (of the castrato) is Top 10 Incredible Recordings

Fascinating stuff. There must be all kinds of firsts for Popes as the Church made its way into the twentieth century (first Pope to fly; ride a car; use a phone, etc.). Thanks for the information.

Tom
